Sucessfully complete Year 2 of the BEng (Aerospace) program.


Course Description

The course is designed to address modern issues in aerospace engineering, technology and management that are not covered under the traditional sub-disciplines of aerospace engineering. It will encompass aerospace governing bodies, industries, institutions and the issues and challenges facing the technology. It will cover fresh topics governed by the dynamic operation and business environment of aerospace and aviation.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course develops and assesses the following program learning outcomes:
• Discernment of knowledge development and research directions within the engineering discipline
• Knowledge of contextual factors impacting the engineering discipline
• Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the specific discipline
• Effective oral and written communication in professional and lay domains
• Professional use and management of information


Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:
• Explain the key issues that drive and shape the global aerospace industry sector
• Describe the nature of the global aerospace industry and the leading companies and consortia
• Describe the position and role of Australian industry in the global environment
• Explain the role of Australian Government departments and bodies responsible for Aerospace and Aviation
• Explain the policies and procedures that govern Australian aerospace
• Demonstrate understanding of the Australian aerospace industry sector, including the major companies and their current/future projects
• Explain the roles and importance of research and development, education and professional organisations in aerospace
• Demonstrate awareness of the challenges that face the development of aerospace technology
• Explain the contemporary and future technical issues facing the global aerospace industry
• Present critically-analysed research findings at a professional level
• Use the learning in this course to understand employment opportunities and plan a professional career


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning activities can include lectures and class discussions, independent research and assignment work (individual and in groups), and a visit to the Australian Airshow where appropriate.

The course will comprise of lectures (including guest lectures by the government and industry senior executives), and an exposure to the policies and the work environment of an aerospace professional. Students are expected to reinforce the lecture material by using the textbook and references, and through completing given problems.
 


Overview of Learning Resources

Course notes – mostly in the form of Powerpoint slides – are made available on the course Blackboard site, which is accessed through myRMIT. The Powerpoint slides are presented on Blackboard in the order they are covered in class. There is a separate set of slides for each of the learning topics. You must come to the lectures with a hard copy of these notes which will allow you to write into additional information covered in classroom discussions. These notes will provide you with a valuable resource for completing your assignments and other types of assessment.


Overview of Assessment

Assessment will be by a mix of individual and group work, which can include assignments, research assignments, and a group project and presentation.
