Required Prior Study
You should have satisfactorily completed LANG1200 Spanish 4 or equivalent before you commence this course (B2.1 on the CEFR*).
Students who studied Spanish outside RMIT must attend a placement test. Please note that enrolments in Spanish courses may be refused on the basis of previous Spanish study or abilities, and enrolment in a different course may be recommended. A student’s enrolment in a course for which s/he holds incompatible qualifications or abilities may be cancelled at any time of the semester. This cancellation may involve forfeiture of credit, and students may remain liable for course fees. Please contact the course coordinator to organise a placement test.

Course Description
This course is the fifth of six consecutive courses and two advanced culture courses in Spanish offered at RMIT University. It can be taken concurrently with Spanish Language and Society or serve as a prerequisite for both Spanish Language in Context and Spanish Language and Society
You will have the opportunity to broaden your interest and knowledge of Hispanic cultures and societies by exploring elements of national and regional gastronomy. All classes will be delivered in Spanish, and emphasis will be placed on the development of oral fluency and aural competency, as well as your written ability in the Spanish language.
You will be encouraged to be responsible for your own learning, be creative and critical in your application of knowledge of the language, and to build on your knowledge to a level where learning can continue to develop in further studies.

This course will complement the RMIT capabilities you are developing in your program.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
CLO1 Communicate effectively in both oral and written Spanish on familiar topics in most social and vocational contexts
CLO2 Reflect on and begin to use a variety of registers in the Spanish language appropriately in a range of familiar contexts
CLO3 Evaluate and debate some topical social issues in contemporary Spanish speaking cultures (e.g. environment), in Spanish
CLO4 Discuss a range of authentic spoken and written materials in Spanish, including film and multimedia
CLO5 Use the language learning strategies you have acquired, and demonstrate independent learning
CLO6 Debate areas of cultural values and norms in. Spanish speaking countries and contrast them with the Australian context
Overview of Learning Activities
A variety of structured in class exercises provide opportunities to develop your skills, with emphasis is placed on communicative skill building, guided and natural conversations, and hypothetical situations.
Multimedia teaching and learning resources, and readings relating to sociolinguistics and cross-cultural communication issues will be introduced and discussed. Various role-plays, exercises and games are employed to expose potential difficulties, which may arise in cross-cultural communication.
You will be expected to participate actively in many pair and group activities and to use only Spanish. Therefore, regular class attendance is important to support your learning.

You may need to access a prescribed text and a recommended Language dictionary. Multi-media teaching and learning resources and tools will also be used, and made available through our online systems which you can access at myRMIT/studies.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
Assessment Tasks
Assessment Tasks 1: Language proficiency 45% (including 3 parts: 10%, 15% & 20%); (e.g. summary writing, video & audio response and oral) (CLO1, CLO3, CLO4 & CLO5)
Assessment Task 2: Intercultural content, Presentation and Essay 40% (20% each part) (CLO1, CLO3, CLO4, CLO5 & CLO6)
Assessment Task 3: Oral reflection 15% (CLO1, CLO2 & CLO5)
Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
You will receive verbal and/or written feedback from your lecturers and/or peers on your assessment tasks. You will participate in editing drafts after feedback in addition to providing peer feedback and peer assessment with rubrics.
