Course Description

This course will provide you with the opportunity to acquire knowledge of applied management concepts and principles applicable to the fashion & textiles industry of today. Particular emphasis is placed on innovation, marketing and entrepreneurship, equipping you with the tools to manage today’s rapidly changing business environment and skills that are highly relevant and sought-after. Throughout the course we will investigate organisations such as David Jones to seek understanding as to how and why they have invested in initiatives such as their interactive LCD screens on the retail floor.

The course will build on your knowledge with particular attention to the integration of theory and reflective practice and the development of critical thinking, problem solving and critical analysis skills enabling you to develop frameworks and ideas for work in organisational settings including leading teams.

By completing this course, you will leave with the skills to assist established organisations in reaching new levels of success as well as the ability to recognise and respond to opportunities for new business ventures.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

a) Lead and manage own work and other team members or individuals within a fashion and textiles enterprise.

b) Problem solve effectively in a fashion and textiles enterprise.

c) Apply sustainable practices related to fashion and textiles issues.

d) Apply logical and critical thinking in resolving a range of management issues in a fashion and textiles context.


Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Analyse and apply the concepts and principles of innovation and entrepreneurship.

CLO2: Apply and evaluate a range of management practices in a fashion and textiles context.

CLO3: Identify and critically analyse new entrepreneurial ventures and discuss the impact for local and international fashion and textile industries.

CLO4: Generate ideas for new products and services to meet customer needs.

CLO5: Develop and evaluate a business and marketing plan.

CLO6: Evaluate the relationship of sustainability to fashion and textile businesses.


Overview of Learning Activities

Key concepts and their application will be explained and illustrated in on line lectures with opportunities to discuss their use in case studies during tutorials and group discussions.

Industry guest speakers will give you the opportunity to receive feedback on relevant learning activities.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment 1: Group Report and Presentation (30%)

Assessment 2: Quizzes and in-class activity involvement (25%)
CLOs: 3, 4

Assessment 3: Small group research essay and reflection (45%)

Assessment may include tests, case studies and assignments. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
