Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Assumed knowledge and capabilities

You should be able to demonstrate basic skills in computer aided design and manufacturing technology.

Course Description

This course will provide you with the skills and knowledge related to the role of CAD/CAM within your program stream.  You will study the ways that design, development, manufacturing and retail technologies integrate with digital communication and information applications used in the management of Fashion merchandise.

The course is divided equally into two sub-components that are graded individually:

  1. Advanced use of digital software used for designing, formatting and presenting vital information within the setting of a fashion brand or related enterprise (comprising 50% of the marks allocated to MANU2092)

  2. An introduction to Apparel 21 software, a leading Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) technology specifically for the Fashion industry, enabling integration of the retail, wholesale and production functions of a fashion organisation (also comprising 50% of the marks allocated to MANU2092).

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

a) Problem solve effectively in a fashion and textiles enterprise.

b) Apply analytical decision making techniques in a fashion and textiles environment.

c) Apply sustainable practises related to fashion and textiles issues.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Evaluate and apply CAD/CAM or business software and related devices to produce digital graphic and hard copy formats that effectively communicate information across designated levels of the fashion and textiles supply chain.

CLO2: Compare and contrast between standard and dedicated CAD/CAM software/hardware systems and explain their integrated use within textile, fashion, and merchandising contexts.

CLO3: Explain and advise on issues regarding CAD/CAM and related software applications in a fashion and textile context.

Overview of Learning Activities

Your learning will be facilitated via a range of in-class online and self-directed activities that will require both individual and collaborative engagement. Class activities will promote your ability to investigate, plan, analyse, prototype, and realise ideas for fashion and textile based sustainable innovation.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment 1: Apparel 21 - Holistic Task plus practical tests (50%)
CLO: 3

Assessment 2: CAD Presenting You (20%)
CLO: 1

Assessment 3: Presenting Major B (30%)
CLO: 2

Assessment may include tests, case studies and assignments. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Director or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.
