Course Description

This course provides an introduction to the principles underlying quality systems as they apply to the commercial/aviation industry, and explores quality techniques that have been developed over many years.

Quality is not only relevant to product characteristics; it is equally important in assessing customer satisfaction and systems performance – hence quality is fundamental to Aviation.

If quality cannot be maintained and assured then a safe and reliable air transportation system will not exist.  Perhaps more importantly, if quality cannot be maintained and assured then the effectiveness of any quality improvement efforts cannot be evaluated.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Apply the principles of quality management to typical aviation industry scenarios;
  2. Relate relevant philosophies to quality management methods and techniques;
  3. Utilise common quality tools in a professional context; and
  4. Develop quality improvement strategies.


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning process follows a "blended" approach, whereby students are advised to read, listen to, and engage in all the pre-lecture material contained in the Canvas shell. 

There will be a weekly face-to-face tutorial, and an additional weekly online tutorial, to summarize key points, examine relevant case studies, work through any analysis, and address any student questions related to aviation quality systems. Recordings of the online sessions will be available on canvas following the delivery.
