Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

This course requires Human Factors in Aviation (or equivalent) as a pre-requisite course.
A the start of this course, students will be expected to be able to:
• Demonstrate awareness of the limitations of human performance under various environmental and interpersonal conditions
• Demonstrate awareness of the limitations of performance created at the human-machine interface
• Apply knowledge of human task performance limitations in the aviation environment with a view to improving safety
• Demonstrate appropriate skills in written communication, group interaction, research and library use.


Course Description

What is this course about? Outlines the contribution to learning that this course is designed to provide and how the course builds upon previous studies if relevant.
Crew Resource Management (CRM) is training which aims to reduce aviation accidents through improving crew performance. This advanced course in CRM takes a Systems Engineering approach by acknowledging that ‘crew’ implies a team which includes cockpit and cabin crew, but should also be extended in the training process to include instructors, check pilots, schedulers, air traffic controllers and airline management.

Learning will be developed through extensive reading and assignments to enable the student to develop a broad knowledge of the complexities and breadth of the course’s context within the aviation discipline.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Provides an overview of what the student will learn in the course including the capabilities to be achieved
Using this systems engineering approach, students will be introduced to the following key areas of study:
• The meaning of ‘team’ in the airline environment: CRM training beyond the cockpit;
• The importance of embedding system-based CRM into the corporate culture and the need for ongoing training and reinforcement;
• Workload planning, risk and situational awareness, stress reduction;
• Communications processes, supervision techniques, assertive behaviour;
• Decision making, conflict resolution;
• The cockpit team and interpersonal relationships.


On completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Be able to critique the importance of training in the airline environment which includes a broad range of roles, all of which contribute to safe operations;
• Identify the conditions under which cockpit crew may become overloaded, and to be able to apply methods to avoid this overload;
• Communicate effectively and unambiguously in abnormal conditions, while demonstrating leadership and assertiveness as required;
• Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills in the cockpit environment

  • classroom-based activities (for students studying in face-to-face mode) and equivalent for students studying in distance mode
  • teacher-directed reading & self-initiated reading/research
  • set activities related to assessment
