Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

None.

Course Description

This is an introductory course designed to provide you with the scientific and practical knowledge required to apply the skills of locomotion and object control in an applied exercise science context. You will develop an understanding of the 11 Fundamental Motor Skills (FMS). You will also gain an understanding of how mastery of these FMS forms an integral link to the development of more complex skills used in games, sports and recreational activities. Gymnastics and Minor Games will be used to demonstrate how fundamental skills are developed and applied through sports. The course will be taught using a range of teaching styles.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will contribute to the student’s development of a range of Victorian Institute of Teaching and Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership National Professional Standards for Teachers (AITSL).

Course Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Describe and evaluate the FMS and key gymnastic movement principles.
2. Demonstrate with proficiency the basic loco-motor, object control and gymnastic skills and incorporate these skills into general and sport specific skills, drills and games.
3. Analyse the FMS and be able to accurately identify and dissect each FMS into components or parts.
4. Understand the sequence in which certain components of each FMS and gymnastic skills are mastered and why/how this affects learning and teaching.
5. Identify common faults in FMS and gymnastics performance and identify teaching strategies to address the faults.
6. Understand the importance of FMS to developing active, lifelong learners.

Upon the successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of students and know how they learn (PLO 1)
2. Develop content knowledge and how to teach it (PLO 2)
3. Plan and implement effective teaching and learning strategies (PLO 3)
4. Create and maintain a supportive and safe learning environment (PLO 4)
5. Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning (PLO 5)

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in practical sessions, theory sessions, demonstration teaching tasks, scientific writing to a high literacy standard, and independent reading of both Australian and international peer reviewed texts and journals. You will be strongly encouraged to practice skills in those areas where their ability to demonstrate skills needs improvement.

Overview of Learning Resources

Learning resources in this course include practical activities, class readings, support material and references on selected topics. The myRMIT blackboard provides opportunities for you to independently access much of this material.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment for this course may include:

1. Fundamental movement skill assignment

2. A logbook of Gymnastics activities

3. A logbook of FMS activities

4. An online quiz
