Course Description

This is an introductory course designed to provide you with the scientific and practical knowledge required to apply and teach propulsive, receptive and striking skills. These skills and related concepts and strategies will be applied in a range of practical sport and games based settings.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course will contribute to your development of a range of Victorian Institute of Teaching and Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership National Professional Standards for Teachers (AITSL).

Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:

1. Understand scientific principles relevant to the performance improvement in propulsive, receptive and striking skills.
2. Identify common features of technique for basic skills in the propulsive, receptive and striking skills.
3. Analyse performance across a range of propulsive, receptive and striking skills and apply selected principles from biomechanics, kinesiology, exercise physiology and motor control to improve performance.
4. Demonstrate an ability to provide selected propulsive, receptive and striking skills and activities according to the needs and capabilities of individuals.
5. Improve their own performance in selected propulsive, receptive and striking skills and concepts through the application of relevant scientific principles.
6. An understanding of safety and legal issues in relation to the implementation of propulsive, receptive and striking skills and activities.
7. Teach components of propulsive, receptive and striking skills to peers in supportive environments.

Program Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Develop content knowledge and how to teach it (PLO2)
2. Plan and implement effective teaching and learning strategies (PLO3)
3. Create and maintain a supportive and safe learning environment ((PLO4)
4. Assess, provide feedback and report on student learning (PLO5)

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in practical laboratory sessions, peer-teaching, written analysis, skill analysis and independent reading of both Australian and international peer-reviewed texts and journals. You will be strongly encouraged to practice skills in those areas where their ability to demonstrate skills needs improvement.

Overview of Learning Resources

Learning resources in this course include practical activities, class readings and notes, and references on selected topics. The myRMIT system provides opportunities for you to independently access much of this material. You will be directed towards relevant websites.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment for this course will consist of:

Assignments based around your ability to apply your knowledge of propulsive, receptive and striking skills and basic biomechanical principles to the teaching of physical education in a school setting.
