Course Description
This course is an introduction to laboratory medicine involving the various clinical laboratory disciplines and will involve an on-site / virtual experience in a diagnostic pathology laboratory. In addition, this course will help you with the transition to the RMIT learning environment.

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:
- Describe the different disciplines in a diagnostic laboratory and some of the basic tests that they perform.
- Explain the total testing processes in a diagnostic laboratory; from patient to results.
- Develop and apply skills in information literacy and numeracy, study-learning, time-management and personal management skills.
- Employ and practice written and verbal communication skills, be able to work effectively in teams, and to contribute to debates on current issues in laboratory sciences.
- Identify and apply basic theoretical and practical skills including environmental impact of laboratory medicine, as well as ethical and safe practice (OH&S) in diagnostic laboratory.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.
