Course Description

This course focuses on the planning and development of animation concepts using theory, practice and appropriate technology. You will explore advanced techniques that bring animation to life, including facial expression, body movement and audio production. Through the exploration and design of narrative structures, you will investigate the importance of character design and develop skills for creating rich characters. You will also identify the business and funding requirements that need to be addressed during the scripting process, develop scripts specific to animated concepts, and ‘pitch’ and present your animation concepts.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course addresses the following program learning outcomes:

  • Employ a body of theoretical knowledge of visual systems, narrative structures and navigational forms to communicate animated linear and interactive concepts.
  • Utilise technical skills in motion and interaction design, through a range of authoring systems, to visualise, structure and construct effective linear and interactive media outcomes.
  • Apply initiative and judgment in planning, problem solving and decision making in professional practice or future study.
  • Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within the discipline.

Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Investigate and evaluate the conceptual and commercial requirements for contemporary 2D animation productions.
  2. Initiate the design, planning and development of 2D animation productions, and present concepts for peer feedback.
  3. Explore the appropriate techniques and technologies to solve 2D animation problems.
  4. Apply, manipulate and combine media to create advanced 2D animated performances.
  5. Critically appraise and evaluate the work of others in the area of 2D animation.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.

The semester will be divided into core concepts pertaining to Studio Animation. Each section will be devoted to a conceptual framework and development of particular skills and creative abilities. You will learn through individual inquiry and research, as well as guidance provided in class.

In addition to scheduled classes you will need to spend at least twice as many hours as the class’s duration each week working on assignment tasks and consolidating the knowledge, understanding and capabilities gained in class.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems.

A list of recommended learning resources will be provided by your lecturer, including books, journal articles and web resources. You will also be expected to seek further resources that are relevant to the focus of your own learning.

There are services available to support your learning, including the University Library and Study Support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Learning outcomes 1-5 are addressed in each task.

Assessment Tasks:

Assessment 1: Secondary Action (50%)

Assessment 2: Perspective (50%)

Details of each assessment task (an assignment brief) will be available in the online platforms used by this course. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
