Course Description

In this course you will further develop design concepts and practical skills to generate advanced 3D animation. You will investigate and explore 3D imaging and animation techniques including character acting, rendering, morphing, and virtual environments. This course gives you an opportunity to develop concepts and identify the commercial requirements for a successful 3D animated project. You will investigate and apply current professional technical systems to create 3D animation and dynamic visual design.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course addresses the following program learning outcomes: 

Employ a body of theoretical knowledge of visual systems, narrative structures and navigational forms to communicate animated linear and interactive concepts.

Utilise technical skills in motion and interaction design, through a range of authoring systems, to visualise, structure and construct effective linear and interactive media outcomes.

Demonstrate creativity, critical thinking and innovation when identifying and solving problems in diverse contexts within the discipline.


Upon the successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  1. Initiate the design, planning and development of 3D animation productions.
  2. Explore the appropriate techniques and technologies to solve 3D animation problems.
  3. Apply, manipulate and combine media to create advanced 3D animated performances.
  4. Investigate and evaluate the conceptual and commercial requirements for contemporary 3D animation productions.
  5. Critically appraise and evaluate the work of others in the area of 3D animation.


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in learning that involves a range of activities such as studios, project work, lectures, tutorials, class discussion, individual and group activities.

The semester will be divided into core concepts pertaining to 3D Animation Advanced. Each section will be devoted to a conceptual framework and development of particular skills and creative abilities. Assignments will be given which relate to the skills and knowledge gained in each particular area.

Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

You will develop your abilities in project development, 3D modelling, lighting, texturing and animation. You will be encouraged to challenge and develop your creative and critical ability through class exercises and individual projects.
