You should have satisfactorily completed VART3421 Integrated Project 2 and VART3423 Theories and Professional Practice 2 before you commence this course.
Course Description
This course will be co-delivered with the MFA course VART3620 Professional Practice.
In this course you will be exposed to a variety of voices and positions from within the art world that contribute to your evolving relationship to professional art practice.
Drawing on expertise from arts industry professionals including practicing artists, curators, gallerists (including public, commercial and artist-run initiatives), theorists, critics and gallery administrators, this course experience may consist of lectures, seminars, tutorials, student presentations, studio visits and field trips.You will also begin to incorporate your research into your field of practice identifying thinkers and makers that constellate the world of your creative practice.
This course includes work integrated learning experiences in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real or simulated workplace context and where feedback from industry and/ or community is integral to your experience.

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:
- Analyse and evaluate global, social, cultural, environmental and historical knowledge and contexts that may inform your art practice.

The Professional Practice Advanced Seminars will be assessed through three tasks that critically explore diverse ideas operative within contemporary art practice. Primarily this will be a professional practice report (50%: 1500-2000 words) and two tasks that ask you to critically reflect on course material and seminar presentations. These may take the form of panel presentations, reviews, and written proposals for grants, exhibitions or residencies
Written proposal for a grant/exhibition or residency (LO 1 2 3)(WIL task) 30%
Amended Proposal (LO 1 2 3 4)(incorporating WIL feedback) 30%
Website/Portfolio (LO 1 2 3 4) 40%
Assessment Tasks
1. An industry standard proposal for a grant, exhibition or residency (WIL task with industry assessor feedback) 30%
Students will have the opportunity to develop their professional skills through preparing a proposal for a grant, exhibition or residency. This assessment is a genuine professional development opportunity – you are encouraged to find something that you want to apply for.
Writing about your practice and preparing support material are important skills to develop. The ability to communicate effectively to funding bodies, galleries, media and other arts industry bodies is an important professional skill. This project will help you develop skills in writing clear and concise proposals that effectively articulate your practice, as well as developing support material that is a strong representation of your work.
To complete this assessment, find something that you want to apply for. This could include:
- an application to a funding agency (such as an Australia Council for the Arts grant).
- an exhibition proposal (examples include West Space, Bus Projects or Kings ARI).
- a residency application (such as ‘Tropical Lab’ at LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore).
There are many others – this assessment task encourages you to find opportunities for yourself.
You will be assessed on your ability to:
• Alignment with requirements around proposal criteria and format
• Ability to an identify appropriate industry-based opportunity
• Strength and appropriateness of creative/visual support material
• Clarity and impact of written proposal
2. Website/Portfolio:
You will be assessed on your ability to:
- Ability to provide a strong, critically engaged text-based narrative about you and your practic
- Ability to provide compelling and high quality creative support material
- Ability to create a website with a mood, atmosphere and architecture appropriate to your practice
3. An industry standard proposal for a grant, exhibition or residency (incorporating your WIL feedback) 30%
You will receive feedback and a mark on your initial proposal.
As part of work integrated learning aims, you will then have a few weeks to incorporate this feedback and submit a final draft of your proposal by week 14. This amended proposal is worth a further 30%.
You will be assessed on your ability to:
- Alignment with requirements around criteria and format
- Ability to an identify appropriate industry-based opportunity
- Strength and appropriateness of creative/visual support material
- Clarity and impact of written proposal
- Integration of WIL feedback into the amended proposal
