You should have satisfactorily completed Integrated Project 2 and Theories and Professional Practice 2 before you commence this course.


Course Description

This course will be co-delivered with two courses from the Master of Fine Art: Studio 4: Resolution and Beginnings (VART3619) and Language of Creative Research (VART3621).

As a capstone experience for the program, in this course you will finalise a major project and present it to external examiners in the form of documentation of your project through a Research Catalogue and public presentation. The project may result as a work in public space or presented as a fully resolved concept (not necessarily implemented in practice). 

The course will culminate in you preparing a Research Catalogue and giving a public presentation that document the project’s research aims, objectives, questions, rationale, context, methodology and outcomes within a critical and theoretically informed framework. These outcomes will reflect a sustained research project that brings to fruition all prior learning and demonstrates an advanced body of knowledge appropriate to professional public art practice and further learning.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Engage in self-directed learning and independent research with an emphasis on art in public space practice to develop an individual and collaborative art practice and locate practices within an appropriate conceptual and theoretical context
  • Communicate to a professional level the conceptual development of a body of work within the framework of contemporary public art practice
  • Produce a body of work that demonstrates a professional level of technical and conceptual excellence in a selected area (or areas) of contemporary public art practice.


Upon successful completion of Studio 4: Resolution and Beginnings (VART3619), you will be able to:

  1. Finalise a substantial art in public space research project through the resolution of innovative creative practice that demonstrates new formations of knowledge
  2. Demonstrate the integration of theory and practice through the resolution of your major research project
  3. Critically and reflectively evaluate creative outcomes in relation to appropriate theoretical and conceptual discourse in the field of art ion public space.
  4. Demonstrate through your practice an awareness of issues of sustainability in the creation of contemporary art in public space

Upon successful completion of Language of Creative Research (VART3621), you will be able to:

  1. Articulate your creative practice in the language of research.
  2. Use the appropriate language of creative research to better articulate and communicate the concepts that underpin your creative work.

This course is undertaken through an independent project supported by academic advice, lectures, tutorials and guided reading.


A variety of learning activities are used primarily through lectures, seminars, tutorials, guided reading and discussion and developed through practical application in a major project assisted through academic advice.

Overview of Assessment

For Studio 4: Resolution and Beginnings (VART3619) you will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment includes a Research Project documented and presented through a Research Catalogue and Public Presentation. Assessment Tasks:

  1. Research Catalogue (LO 1 2 3 4) 50%
  2. Public Presentation (LO 1 2 3 4) 50%

For Language of Creative Research (VART3621) you will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment Tasks include:

  1. Objectives (20%) and Rationale (20%) (LO1, LO2)
  2. Brief Description (20%) (LO1, CLO2)
  3. Key Research Questions (20%), Title & Summary (20%) (LO1, LO2)
