Course Description

This course provides you with an introduction to the Australian publishing industry and how it sits within a global context. You will examine the different sectors of the market, such as commercial, educational and corporate publishing as well as the legal and statutory considerations of publishing. You will analyse the challenges and opportunities that globalisation and technological change present to the Australian publishing industry.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Course Learning Outcomes

 Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Critically analyse the principal operations and functions of specific sectors of the Australian book publishing industry in their historical, cultural and commercial contexts.
  2. Investigate and analyse the legal and business issues and responsibilities associated with publishing.
  3. Make judgements based on a practical understanding of the business of book publishing and the future directions of the industry.
  4. Investigate and report on global and local aspects of the book publishing industry.


 


Program Learning Outcomes
 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  1.  Critically analyse and identify the future directions – opportunities and challenges – for book publishing.
  2. Effectively and professionally communicate your ideas to specialist and non-specialist audiences.
  3. Work collaboratively to plan and produce communication projects appropriate to the publishing environment.
  4. Undertake research into contemporary media and communication theory and practice to explore possible industry and career directions. 


Overview of Learning Activities

The course will take a blended approach to its delivery with learning activities that involve a range of activities, including lectures, site visits, tutorials, group discussion and activities, peer review and individual research. All sessions are face to face.
