Course Description

The aim of this course is to develop your psychological knowledge in the areas of cross cultural psychology, organizational psychology and professional issues. You will explore the basic concepts of cross-cultural psychology, the problem of measurement biases, the question of universality of ’normal’ behaviours and rates of mental disorder across cultures. The role of acculturation stress and its impact on migrants’ settlement experience is explored. Organizational psychology, which explores the theories and concepts of how organizations operate effectively is also addressed. You will investigate the ways in which individuals and groups function in organizations and the impact of the organisational environment. The dynamics of working in a multicultural society are also considered.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes for BP154 Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology):

  • PLO 1:  Understand appropriate and relevant fundamental and applied evidence based knowledge and undertake lifelong learning to improve personal and professional practice 
  • PLO 6: develop collaborative partnerships with colleagues, other professionals and the community that build on the capacity of others and develop open and flexible relationships that adapt to evolving needs and aspirations.


On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Apply basic psychological principles to the areas of cross cultural and organizational psychology;
  2. Analyse and compare the applicability of psychological theories to various cultural groups;
  3. Analyse and compare the applicability of psychological theories to various organizational settings


Overview of Learning Activities

Learning is attained through lectures, online activities, relevant preparatory and wider reading and completion of assessment tasks. These activities will draw on your previous knowledge of introductory psychology material, communication skills and academic research techniques. Lectures will provide a combination of didactic teaching and class discussion. Non-engagement with the online learning material will severely limit your chances of completing successful assignment work and may jeopardise the gaining of essential educational experiences.

Assessment completed in the first half of the semester will provide feedback on your progress. Ongoing feedback on your skills will be provided from peers and staff.

Teacher Guided Hours: 48 per semester

Learner Directed Hours: 72 per semester


Overview of Learning Resources

The learning resources associated with this course will include targeted readings taken from a range of both primary and secondary sources. Material chosen may be digitally available to you. Lecture material will be available online via Canvas, with Discussion Board interaction and Collaborate workshops. Practice learning activities will be provided in a variety of ways, including simulated learning activities. RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems
