Course Description

In this course you will further enhance your professional skills and knowledge about the principles involved in cartography, including map resources and the usability of contemporary mapping products. The study and application of aspects of thematic cartography to the design and production of innovative maps and atlases form a focus point of your study.

Please note that if you take this course for a bachelor honours program, your overall mark in this course will be one of the course marks that will be used to calculate the weighted average mark (WAM) that will determine your award level. (This applies to students who commence enrolment in a bachelor honours program from 1 January 2016 onwards. See the WAM information web page for more information.)

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On completion of this course you should be able to:

1. Apply theoretical cartographic design concepts in the production of a publishable atlas map product
2. Demonstrate a solid theoretical understanding of cartographic design and mapping visualisation needs, particularly focused on atlas design.
3. Apply usability techniques to improve map design
4. Demonstrate skills and techniques related to real mapping programmes
5. Describe the methods employed in the collection of cartographic data and assembly for map compilation
6. Select the appropriate procedures for different practical mapping applications and solve emerging problems individually and collaboratively.

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes in BH117 (Bachelor of Science (Geospatial Science):

1.2 Demonstrate in-depth understanding of the spatial models and mathematical methods used in contemporary practice.
1.3 Understand specialist bodies of knowledge in geospatial science
1.4 Understand models of cartographic communication.
2.3 Be proficient in the recording, storage, management and reporting of spatial information.
2.4 Use cartographic design skills for the visualisation and representation of information.
3.1 Design and implement creative solutions to complex problems.
4.1 Communicate effectively by means of oral, written and graphical presentations to peers and a wider audience.
6.2 Work with others and contribute in a constructive manner to group and team activities.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in lectures including an industry presentation and studio sessions exploring the course content and its practical application.

Teacher Directed Hours: 57 per semester
Learner Directed Hours: 60 per semester.

Overview of Learning Resources

As a student enrolled in this course at RMIT University you can access the extensive learning resources provided in the school and in the RMIT Library, such as books, journals and other course-related materials (electronic and paper-based) Our library offers extensive services and facilities, geared to assist you in completing your studies successfully.
