Course Description

In this integrated, practical course you will participate in three distinct modules:

Data Acquisition and Surveying introduces theoretical and practical concepts regarding data acquisition from various sources. You will use data collection (smart phone apps) to undertake a field mapping exercise and use this data to examine concepts around data quality, making links to the importance of surveying for the provision of fit-for-purpose spatial datasets.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) introduces the principles of GIS. You will undertake practical exercises and lab sessions designed to introduce the techniques of digital data transfer, data editing and manipulation. You will explore basic spatial analysis processes and make use of data from the previous module.

Cartography complements the theoretical and practical concepts relevant to the visual communication of spatial planning and development. You will work with data from the previous modules and apply basic principles of visual and cartographic design to produce an effective re-development plan.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) for:

BH116 Bachelor of Surveying (Honours)
BH117 Bachelor of Geospatial Science (Honours)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Collect and justify basic spatial data and attributes in the field and work productively as a member of a field acquisition team
    2. Demonstrate basic knowledge of data quality as it relates to spatial data
    3. Perform basic digital spatial data analysis, manipulation, editing and conversions
    4. Produce a cartographic product to a high standard of both content and presentation
    5. Argue and demonstrate the necessity of thorough editing of cartographic products
    6. Present results to your peers and teaching staff.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities such as lectorials, tutorials, practicals, laboratories, seminars, project work, class discussion, individual and group activities. Delivery may be face to face, online or a mix of both.

You are encouraged to be proactive and self-directed in your learning, asking questions of your lecturer and/or peers and seeking out information as required, especially from the numerous sources available through the RMIT library, and through links and material specific to this course that is available through myRMIT Studies Course.

Overview of Learning Resources

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through myRMIT Studies Course.

There are services available to support your learning through the University Library. The Library provides guides on academic referencing and subject specialist help as well as a range of study support services. For further information, please visit the Library page on the RMIT University website and the myRMIT student portal.

Computer Labs with the required software are also available for your study. Furthermore we would like you to note the additional resources for Surveying (Prescribed Calculator: HP33s RPN Scientific Calculator).

A library subject guide is available at: http://rmit.libguides.com/geospatial
