Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Before enrolling in MATH2163 a student must successfully complete VCE Mathematical Methods at Year 12 levelor its equivalent.

Course Description

This course aims to foster your technical competence by introducing you to the fundamental mathematical procedures (e.g. differentiation) and mathematical objects (e.g. vectors and matrices) required by surveyors and geomaticians. The course builds on the foundations laid in secondary school mathematics and in turn lays the foundation for more advanced studies in subsequent mathematics, surveying and geomatics courses.  Fortnightly practice classes aim to develop your capability to solve problems and to apply mathematical ideas and techniques. You will generally work collaboratively in these classes, discussing problems amongst yourselves and with class tutors in attendance

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the development of the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):

PLO2: Critically analyse and evaluate information, standards, methods, tools, and practices in the role of a Surveyor.

On completion of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Apply core mathematical skills, such as arithmetical and algebraic manipulation skills and elementary geometry and trigonometry, to a range of problems
  2. Formulate and solve problems involving change and approximation using  techniques of differential calculus
  3. Identify the elementary properties of vectors, lines and planes and apply the techniques of vector analysis to problems involving three-dimensional geometry
  4. Employ properties of common mathematical functions (polynomials, exponentials and hyperbolic functions, logarithms, inverse trigonometric and inverse hyperbolic functions) and their combinations commonly found in surveying and geomatics applications.

Overview of Learning Activities

Key concepts and their application will be explained and illustrated (with many examples) in the lectorials and in online notes. Supervised problem-based practice classes will build your capacity to solve problems, encourage you to think critically and analytically and provide feedback on your academic progress. In-class End-of-topic tests will consolidate your basic skills, e.g. in algebra and trigonometry, and identify and rectify gaps in your basic knowledge of the topics presented in class.Quizzes on the material covered that week in lectorials, and practice questions found on Canvas, will provide a focus for your private study.

Overview of Learning Resources

Students will also be able to access the following online learning resources:

  • Weekly Lecture Notes.
  • Full solutions to Practice Classes/ Closed Book Tests.

These learning resources can be accessed on the MATH2163 Canvas site: https://rmit.instructure.com/courses/96126

A library guide is available at http://rmit.libguides.com/mathstats
