The assumed knowledge for this course requires that students have completed ENVI1187 Sustainability Project 2 or equivalent.

Course Description

The set of Sustainability Body of Practice courses aims to articulate a range of different practices from different disciplines that can be used to move through the problem solving or managing cycle. This course involves you in negotiating about a selected sustainability topic or component of a larger issue or development and exploring directions to complete the project. 

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course develops the following Program capabilities:

S4 - Communication and technical research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions, methodologies, conclusions and professional decisions to specialist and non-specialist audiences.

S5 - Technical and communication skills to design, evaluate, implement, analyse and theorise about developments that contribute to professional practice or scholarship.

A2 - With high level personal autonomy and accountability.

A3 - To plan and execute a substantial research-based project, capstone experience and/or piece of scholarship.

The course develops the following capabilities:

1 Propose a project brief explaining the background to a complex environmental project

2 Identify and define a sustainability problem within the context of a complex development issue

3 Write a briefing paper on project reports

4 Demonstrate knowledge of evaluation frameworks such as the Green Star Communities

5 Describe the planning and development for communities in an urban ecology context

On successful completion of this course, you should also be aware of processes to communicate, identify and define sustainability problems and issues and research.

Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities in this course are embodied in workshops, their preparation and post workshop activities. These workshops are formed around the sustainability project work. In particular activities will include:
• Participating in workshop sessions
• Working in groups
• Developing a learning contract
• Identifying problem for a project
• Self directed reading and research about sustainability problem(s) and issues, from a range of perspectives – economic, social, environmental
During the course you will explore a particular area of sustainability negotiated with your supervisor and develop a report on that issue.

Course information and learning materials will be provided through myRMIT or in class. Lists of reference texts, resources in the library and freely accessible Internet sites will be provided.

The course assessment reflects the aim to encourage research in a topic of sustainability and the bulk of the assessment is directed towards the production of the research report.
Students develop individual project briefs for report submission and progress report mid semester - 15% CLO 1
