Course Description

This course will develop your knowledge of advanced Nuclear Medicine acquisition concepts, imaging processing mechanisms in Medical Radiations and developments in detector technology.  You will learn theory relating to topics relating to technology and physics in Nuclear Medicine, so that you will be able to apply this theory to clinical practice.  Topics that you will study will include Gamma Camera in Nuclear Medicine including quality assurance and performance characteristics, SPECT systems, radiation legislation in Nuclear Medicine, transport of radioactive materials, Tracer Kinetic Modelling and GFR calculations.

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Discuss image acquisition and processing techniques applicable to Nuclear Medicine using discipline specific terminology
  2. Describe the effect of ionising radiation on human tissue and the community impact of radiation exposure
  3. Explain radiation safety measures including the management of radioactive waste
  4. Explain technology, instrumentation and physics concepts relevant to the profession of Nuclear Medicine


Overview of Learning Activities

You will participate in a range of learning activities including lectures, laboratory (problem-based learning) classes, online activities and self-directed learning.  This course is supported by RMIT's online Learning Management System (LMS).
 

You will undertake the equivalent of two hours per week in lectures and two hours per week in laboratory classes.  In addition you are expected to spend a minimum of four hours per week in independent study.

You will be expected to make use of the course LMS.  This resource provides a range of materials aimed at supporting your learning and you are encouraged to actively use this site and the material it contains.  You are also expected to conduct a significant level of self-directed learning to reinforce learned concepts.  There is the expectation that you will access appropriate peer-reviewed literature via the RMIT library.  The Medical Radiations Subject Guide (URL: http://rmit.libguides.com/medical-radiations) provides useful references.  A detailed course schedule will be available via myRMIT.  Any changes to this schedule due to unforeseen circumstances will be posted on the online Learning Management System (LMS).
