Course Description

This course builds upon your knowledge and skills developed during the first year of the Medical Radiations program and through your successful completion of the Medical Imaging Technology 1 course. This course is designed to develop an understanding of the physical and instrumental basis of medical imaging technology as it is applied clinically.

Medical Imaging Technology 2 furthers your understanding of the physical concepts and instrumentation which underpin contemporary clinical medical imaging technology. The concepts delivered in Medical Imaging Technology 1 form a foundation knowledge, which is expanded to investigate the theoretical principles underpinning more complex technologies in Medical Imaging Technology 2. This includes the theoretical and physical principles behind CR systems, introduction to DR systems and fluoroscopic imaging systems. The course will be delivered through a series of formal lectures, practical laboratory sessions and tutorials. It will enhance your understanding the principles of operation of new imaging modalities that are introduced in this rapidly growing field, which is driven by emerging new technologies.

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Relate knowledge of the physics concepts, instrumentation and technological principles of Medical Imaging to clinical examinations and procedures
  2. Discuss the principles of Medical Imaging physics and technology, including Computed Radiography (CR), Digital Radiography (DR), Fluoroscopy and Interventional Procedures
  3. Explain the concepts of Medical Imaging Instrumentation and Dosimetry using discipline specific terminology
  4. Explain radiation regulations and radiation safety measures using theoretical knowledge and application of practical skills


Overview of Learning Activities

The core content of Medical Imaging Technology 2 is delivered via a series of lectures. In addition, you may engage in a series of practical laboratory exercises, computer-based laboratory exercises, on-line learning sessions, and on-line quizzes. Further, you are encouraged to pursue self-directed learning, including undertaking recommended reading and attempting problem sheets.

You will undertake the equivalent of four hours per week in lectures and two hours per week in laboratory classes.  In addition you are expected to spend a minimum of four hours per week in independent study.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be expected to make use of the course site on RMIT's online Learning Management System (LMS), which includes announcements, course documents and a discussion board.

Medical Imaging Technology 2 is supported via extensive on-line course materials distributed via the LMS. These may include lecture notes, problem sheets and solutions, on-line learning activities, external internet links and access to RMIT library electronic and hardcopy resources. Threaded discussion forums may also be provided to facilitate discussion of the course content amongst students.
