Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

Required prior study (Pre-requisites)

Required concurrent study (Co-requisites)

Course Description

This course will extend your existing knowledge gained of the technological principles, physics concepts and instrumentation of Radiation Therapy to provide an understanding of more complex physics and technological principles underpinning Radiation Therapy.  You will learn theoretical knowledge relating to the the ability to monitor and understand the effects of ionising radiation upon patients in the clinical setting.  You will also develop an understanding of the theoretical principles behind a range of equipment and techniques employed in Radiation Therapy.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes for BP148 Bachelor of Applied Science (Medical Radiations) (aligned to the Accreditation Standards of the Medical Radiations Practice Board of Australia):

Standard 1.5 Practice in medical radiation sciences

1.5b. Apply principles of medical radiation physics and instrumentation

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Describe technological principles and physics concepts as they relate to Radiation Therapy, including their effect on treatment planning and dosimetry
  2. Evaluate the effectiveness of beams in Radiation Therapy
  3. Discuss quality assurance measures as applied to the clinical practice of Radiation Therapy
  4. Explain the effects of ionising radiation as utilised in Radiation Therapy and discuss monitoring and radiation safety techniques
  5. Demonstrate practical knowledge of Radiobiology and evaluate the impact on Radiotherapy treatment decisions and patient outcomes

Overview of Learning Activities

You will participate in a wide range of learning activities including lectures, practical laboratory classes, computer-based and biology based activities, online learning tasks and self-directed study.  This course is supported by the Online learning Management System (LMS).

You will undertake the equivalent of four hours per week in lectures and four hours per week in laboratory classes.  In addition you are expected to spend a minimum of four hours per week in independent study.

Overview of Learning Resources

You will be expected to make use of RMIT's online Learning Mangement System (LMS).  This resource provides a range of materials aimed at supporting your learning and you are encouraged to actively use this site and the material it contains.  You are also expected to conduct a significant level of self-directed learning to reinforce learned concepts.  There is the expectation that you will access appropriate peer-reviewed literature via the RMIT library.  The Medical Radiations Subject Guide (URL: http://rmit.libguides.com/medical-radiations) provides useful references.  A detailed course schedule will be available via myRMIT.  Any changes to this schedule due to unforeseen circumstances will be posted on the course Blackboard site.
