Course Description

The course will build upon your existing knowledge of the technology, physics concepts and instrumentation that underpin contemporary clinical Medical Imaging.
You will learn about the technology, physics and instrumental basis of advanced imaging modalities in clinical radiologic imaging.  These include fluoroscopy, angiography, digital angiographic subtraction (DSA), mammography, digital mammography, Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) and other specialised radiographic areas.

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

1. Explain theory of technology, instrumentation and physics that underpin advanced Medical Imaging procedures using discipline specific terminology

2. Formulate strategies to solve clinical problems using knowledge of the technological principles and physics concepts of Medical Imaging

3. Describe radiation safety measures through application of knowledge and practical skills


Overview of Learning Activities

This course includes a range of learning activities including lectures, problem-based learning activities and online learning tasks.  You are also encouraged to pursue self-directed learning, including undertaking recommended reading and attempting problem-based learning tasks.  This course is supported by the Blackboard learning management system.
 

You will undertake the equivalent of two hours per week in lectures and two hours per week in problem-based learning classes.  In addition you are expected to spend a minimum of four hours per week in independent study.

You are expected to make use of the course Blackboard site (accessed via myRMIT).  This resource provides a range of materials aimed at supporting your learning and you are encouraged to actively use this site and the material it contains.  You are also expected to conduct a significant level of self-directed learning to reinforce learned concepts.  There is the expectation that you will access appropriate peer-reviewed literature via the RMIT library.  The Medical Radiations Subject Guide (URL: http://rmit.libguides.com/medical-radiations) provides useful references.  A detailed course schedule will be available via myRMIT.  Any changes to this schedule due to unforeseen circumstances will be posted on the course Blackboard site.
