Course Description
This course introduces key computer applications that can be found in engineering technology. Applications include CAD software to produce complex CAD drawings, tools for systems modelling and simulation, and engineering design software.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcome (PLOs):
1.1 Descriptive, formula-based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the practice area.
1.2 Procedural-level understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the practice area.
1.3 In depth practical knowledge and skills within specialist sub-disciplines of the practice area.
1.6 Understanding of the scope, principles, norms, accountabilities and bounds of contemporary engineering practice in the area of practice.
2.2 Application of technical and practical techniques, tools and resources to well defined engineering problems.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs):
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
1. Select appropriate computer applications to store and retrieve data
2. Disseminate given information in basic and advanced PC applications
3. Identify and apply digital/computer fundamentals
4. Identify and use appropriate CAD/CATIA packages to produce complex drawings to appropriate Australian standards.
Overview of Learning Activities
Learning activities include the following:
● Understanding the concepts and tools of computer applications as used in the engineering profession
● Engaging in team-based learning and practical sessions to develop the required skills and knowledge in the use of computer applications.
You will also learn through following additional activities:
● Attending classes, working with others in the computer laboratory and doing weekly class exercises
● Preparing for and successfully completing examination
● Using web resources and an engineering design package (AutoCAD and CATIA)
Overview of Learning Resources
Learning resources will consist of recommended references and class notes which may be accessed through "CANVAS".
The set of references is deliberately broad, including books, journal publications, government reports, industry standards and handbooks, and web-based resources.
