Course Description
This course introduces you to the calculations concerned with the mechanical properties of materials as they relate to the strength and stability of structures and mechanical components, and the skills and knowledge required to develop analytical techniques used to solve a wide range of linear stress/strain problems.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs):
1.1. Descriptive, formula-based understanding of the underpinning natural and physical sciences and the engineering fundamentals applicable to the practice area.
1.2. Procedural-level understanding of the mathematics, numerical analysis, statistics, and computer and information sciences which underpin the practice area.
Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)
On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Describe the concepts and principles, and perform calculations, relative to the strength and stability of structures and mechanical components;
2. Define the characteristics and calculate the magnitude of combined stresses in individual members and complete structures;
3. Analyse various situations involving structural members subjected to combined stresses
4. by application of Mohr’s circle of stress; and
5. Calculate the deflection at any point on a beam subjected to a combination of loads.
Overview of Learning Activities
Lectures and Tutorials, with work sheets solving problems tutorials, Computer Simulations, Assignments and exam.
Overview of Learning Resources
Students will be able to access information and learning materials through myRMIT and may be provided with additional materials in class. List of relevant reference books, resources in the library and accessible Internet sites will be provided where possible. During the course, you will be directed to websites to enhance your knowledge and understanding of difficult concepts.
