Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

A thorough understanding of the IT organisation, IT security, Globalisation of IT, IT Resources, E-Business, and IT Strategy to be able to assess, audit and evaluate the value of IT via IT Governance structures, standards and factors .


Course Description

This course will provide an understanding of IT Governance standards for compliance. This will include ITIL, AS8015, COBIT, SOX, ISO/IEC 38500, e-business and outsourcing governance issues. Implementation of IT Governance structures require organisations to embrace and manage change to ensure desirable behaviour in the use of IT, therefore related change management issues will also be discussed.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

The course capabilities are composed of the following dimensions:
• Ability to describe in detail the role and value of IT in the organisation, IT roles and responsibilities for accountability;
• Ability to determine context and nature of ICT based business at the global level;
• Ability to demonstrate an understanding of ICT governance issues for accountability, audit, security, outsourcing, online business;
• Ability to apply IT standards for audit and compliance;
• Ability to apply ITIL for services;
• Ability to determine change management strategies associated with the adoption of IT Governance structures.


Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:
• Explain the value of IT in an organisation;
• Explain IT Alignment, Strategy and Governance standards for IT functions and accountability;
• Explain IT Governance issues in the 21st century;
• Explain the impact of good governance of IT for accountability, participation, predictability and transparency;
• Work effectively with a team to develop and evaluate IT governance structures and required changes;
• Illustrate an in-depth understanding of ITIL;
• Demonstrate knowledge of AS8015, COBIT, SOX, ISO/IEC 38500, e-business and outsourcing governance issues.


Overview of Learning Activities

Presentation will be face-to-face comprising of lectures, guest speakers and group presentations. Students are expected to complete training on ITIL and written assignments on ITIL and other standards.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment for this course will require students to work individually and in groups. It will comprise a group project, and an individual assignment on ITIL and other Governance standards.
