Course Description

In this course you will explore human behaviour in the work context by considering the interaction between individuals and teams, within and toward organisations. You will develop your abilities to evaluate individuals’ diversity, attitudes, emotions, motivations and stress; and issues of communication, power, conflict management and negotiation within teams.

The study of individuals and teams provide insights into the complex issues of organisational structure, culture and change. This multi-level exploration will develop your ability to apply evidence-based research and theory to contemporary issues of behaviour within organisations to inform human resource management and organisational performance.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

-

On successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

CLO1: Analyse the literature on organisational behaviour.

CLO2: Demonstrate interpersonal skills and persuasive communication.

CLO3: Critically evaluate organisational behaviour problems drawing on theory and research.

CLO4: Design evidence-based solutions to organisational behaviour problems with consideration of ethical ramification of action.

Overview of Learning Activities

In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.

Drawing from ‘active and experiential’ learning pedagogies this course takes the view that classes are not just about reviewing course materials but instead should ‘bring to life’ the course materials by investigating illustrative case studies and interactive exercises that try to replicate an experience associated with the topic in question. Students are mentored to critically compare and contrast what they have experienced, for example, in a current or previous workplace, with what they are learning from the course reading materials. This course is not one ‘delivered’ by the lecturer, but one that is ‘facilitated’ by the lecturer who encourages students to actively engage with the course materials and learn. To make this possible, it is critical that students come to class having completed that week’s required readings and activities before class commences. The greater effort put into preparation prior to the weekly class the more benefit attained from the course. Therefore, we are requiring you to do some independent study before class, which is typical of a Masters level course. Above all, the learning activities (pre, during and after class) are designed to maximise the likelihood that you will not only understand the course reading and discussion materials, but also apply those materials to improving your own practice as a member of a workplace.

Overview of Learning Resources

Various learning resources are available online through MyRMIT Studies\Canvas. The lecture notes and workshop notes are posted on Canvas.

Resources are also available online through RMIT Library databases and other facilities. Visit the RMIT library website for further details. Assistance is available online via our chat and email services, face to face at our campus libraries or via the telephone on (03) 9925 2020.

Additional resources and/or sources to assist your learning will be identified by your course coordinator and will be made available to you as required during the teaching period.

Overview of Assessment

The assessment tasks, their weighting and the course learning outcomes to which they are aligned are as follows:

Assessment Task 1: 20% Linked CLOs: 1, 2

Assessment Task 2: 40% Linked CLOs: 2, 3

Assessment Task 3: 40% Linked CLOs: 1, 2, 3, 4

Feedback will be provided throughout the semester in class and/or in online forums through individual and group feedback on practical exercises and by individual consultation.
