Course Description

The purpose of this course is to equip you to be able to identify the key radiographic and clinical features of the less common pathologies in the categories of arthritide, infection, vascular, trauma, endocrine, tumour and tumour-like disorders.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Within the context of evidence-based care and the legal scope of practice students will gain or improve capabilities for patient-centred care in:

 On successful completion of this course, you are expected to be able to:

CLO 1         Interpret plain film imaging taking into account a review of the patient’s clinical presentation;

CLO 2         Propose a working diagnosis based on a review of the patient’s clinical presentation and their plain film imaging findings and recommend appropriate follow-up. You should be able to support your decisions with relevant evidence from the literature;

CLO 3         Evaluate the radiographic clinical presentation of the patient and articulate the significance of the radiographic findings in relation to the patient’s management;

CLO 4         Demonstrate knowledge of the clinical and radiographic manifestations of the topics included in the course syllabus;

CLO 5         Prepare a written narrative radiology report

CLO 6         Recommend an appropriate referral for follow-up imaging investigation to an initial plain film radiographic presentation that exhibits abnormality.

Overview of Learning Activities

  

The learning activities included in this course are:

• lectures in which syllabus material will be presented and explained, and illustrated with demonstrations and examples;
• practical sessions for radiological film review and discussion to give further practice in the application of theory and procedures and to give feedback on student progress and understanding; and
• private study, working through the course reading list, material presented in classes, other learning materials, and out-of-session radiological film review to gain practice at diagnostic image interpretation.

 You will be provided with a range of opportunities to demonstrate your increasing proficiency in diagnostic imaging interpretation by means of a mid-semester practical examination with group and / or individual feedback.

You will write 20 radiology reports that will be reviewed with feedback where appropriate.

You will undertake summative assessment in the end-of-semester examination period using both the written and practical methods.

 This course has no hurdle requirements.
