(a) Food (Food Preparation and Food Science) or Nutrition and
(b) Health or Human Development or Family
Course Description
This is a methods course that focuses on learning and teaching in Home Economics in schools. In this course, students develop their philosophy and practice within the contexts of food technology and human development. This course will focus on the planning of classroom and curriculum materials.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course is designed to assist students to:
• Appreciate the value of Home Economics in school settings.
• Understand recent curriculum developments in relation to Home Economics and its teaching.
• Plan and implement curriculum for student engagement and learning in this discipline.
• Use curriculum documents and relevant resources to design a course of study and plan classroom activities and materials in Home Economics.
Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
• Define and justify a rationale for Home Economics in secondary schools.
• Demonstrate a general knowledge of selected factors affecting Home Economics curriculum and teaching in secondary schools, based on observation and relevant reading.
• Describe, contrast and evaluate recent developments in Home Economics.
• Identify and critically discuss criteria for selection and organisation of content, resources and activities relevant to Home Economics in secondary schools
• Select and use a variety of teaching and learning techniques appropriate to Home Economics.
• Develop curriculum (course, program and unit descriptions, resources, evaluation instruments) for selected content areas of Home Economics.

At the conclusion of this course, students will have demonstrated and/or acquired the following ICT capabilities:
• Understandings of the role of ICT in learning and implications for the classroom.
• Awareness of a range of contemporary ICT resources suitable for the classroom.
• Skills in using ICT for communication, presentation, work preparation and implementation.

Assessment tasks are directly linked to the stated objectives and outcomes. Assessment in the course will be both theoretical and practical in nature.
