Course Description
Business processes are the production lines of the new economy. They must be managed so that technologies and organizational designs have a common business purpose. The focus of this course is on the design, modelling and simulation of business processes for the purpose of improving them.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
At the conclusion of this course, you should develop the following capabilities:
- Ability to develop business processes that align technology and organizational resources for generating competitive advantage
- Ability to design improved approaches for conducting business processes
- Ability to use simulation for validating and optimizing business processes
At the conclusion of this course, you should be able to:
- Understand the importance of managing business processes
- Understand existing business processes, document them using standard notations and determine their performance
- Design efficient new business processes, or redesign existing ones using sound workflow design principles
- Create business process models that can be simulated for validation and optimization purposes
- Use current industry standards and tools for modelling business processes
Overview of Learning Activities
In order to develop the stated course capabilities, you are expected to actively participate in the following learning activities:
- Regular attendance and active participation in scheduled lectures and workshops.
- Reading of course notes and other assigned reading materials.
- Satisfactory completion of assessment tasks.
While a minimum attendance standard is not compulsory in this course, satisfactory completion of the program is required. Most students will find that regular class attendance is needed to achieve the necessary standard to pass this course.

Students are required to purchase the prescribed text.
Overview of Assessment
The assessment for this course is on the basis of the satisfactory completion of a set of tasks.
The assessment tasks are aligned with the learning outcomes of the course and are designed to assist you in completing the course successfully.
Should the course coordinator deem that variation to the assessment tasks is needed, then this will be discussed with the class and will only proceed with documented consent of 70 percent of students enrolled in the course.
