Course Description

In this course you will cover the main discourse features of texts that create issues for translation, using English texts as the basis.  

Particular attention is paid to cohesive devices and other feature of texts beyond the level of word or phrase. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes 

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Reflect on and apply advanced concepts and knowledge of languages, cultures and research methods in order to facilitate communication across cultures and languages 
  • Apply professional communication skills in multi-lingual environments 



Course Learning Outcomes 

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Identify sources of discoursal meaning in a text or utterance, and apply the knowledge and insights of the scholarly literature to render these meanings in linguistic form in the translated or interpreted output.
  2. Use problem-solving skills to identify whether a source of discoursal meaning in a text or utterance might be translated or interpreted into linguistic or extra-linguistic form.
  3. Creatively consider different options for the translation or interpretation of discoursal meaning in a text or utterance, including into linguistic form. 


Overview of Learning Activities

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities including online lectures tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research. Online classes will be discussion-based to intensively study discourse features of texts. Texts will be chosen from a variety of sources.

RMIT will provide you with resources and tools for learning in this course through our online systems. 

This course will use contemporary texts from a variety of sources that translators may face. Texts will be chosen from media, government and commercial information sources, technical publications and general literature.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.
