As the special project undertaken will vary, pre-requisite knowledge will also vary. 


Course Description

This course gives you the opportunity to obtain academic recognition for work done on an approved special project. Examples include an international RFP-based design (or design and build), student design competition, or nationally or internationally competitive or commercial spin-off project. The design work is undertaken under joint supervision and/or assessment (university and industry), and simulates the environment of a professional engineering design office. Team work and lines and methods of reporting will be defined, and the expectation is that the project work will be ‘on time’ and ‘on budget’ as appropriate to the expectation of the output of an engineering professional. All proposed project must be approved by the Course Organiser. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following program learning outcomes of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours):

Upon successful completion of the course, you should be able to:

  1. Analyse typical issues and challenges of the chosen engineering project;
  2. Demonstrate the ability to be a successful member of a design team and to produce a design outcome at the level expected of a practising professional engineer;
  3. Demonstrate and use reflection as an evaluation and quality improvement tool to foster professional-level communication skills.


Overview of Learning Activities

Your supervised group work will help you develop critical professional skills. While most of your time will be un-supervised - as in the professional engineering environment - your supervisors (university and industry) will provide constructive criticism and guidance at key times. Your group work will involve brainstorming, discussion, presentations, critiquing, calculations, time to integrate ideas, and other activities critical to the design and development of a complex engineering system.


Overview of Learning Resources

You will access many learning resources in the library, from industry sources and elsewhere during the course of the project. Your supervisor will be available at agreed times, but, if possible, will consult with you only at times critical to the progress in, and direction of, the project.
