Course Description

This core course is a postgraduate introductory level course. The course is designed to introduce you to both the theory and practice of teaching and training for human rights. This includes particular emphasis on integrating the objectives of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities Act 2006 into school curriculum and program development in community organisations and the public sector.


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Upon completion of this course you will be able to:
• demonstrate that you have developed a framework of human rights education and professional development capacities, inside specific educational, community and work organisation settings;
• identify and critically reflect on the theory and practice of human rights education;
• identify and critically reflect on the principles and practice of curriculum design;
• identify and engage with the relevant skills and approaches to training the trainer;
• understand and engage in effective public presentational and instructional skills, theory, practice of group process, workshop facilitation skills and curriculum evaluation


The course aims to equip you with the pedagogical theories and tools that can contribute to building a culture of human rights in a variety of educational settings. The course will begin with an overview of the history and practice of human rights education, exploring both the global and philosophical dimensions of the subject.

You will also be introduced to a range of student centred pedagogies and explore how human rights can be applied as a framework for such pedagogies. You will be asked to develop human rights curriculum and engage in experiential learning using small groups to develop both insight and experience in effective human rights learning projects.
