You should have satisfactorily completed the prerequisite course COM2411 Communication and Social Relations before you commence this course.
Course Description
In this course you will investigate the uses and applications of communication technologies in terms of their cultural, economic and political significance. You will focus on a range of traditional and digital technologies, analysing them through a number of different frameworks. Guiding questions of the course include: In what ways are technologies always social? How have older technologies adapted to more recent historical conditions and innovations?

- Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on your discipline in both local and international contexts

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:
•discuss a range of major communication technologies, in terms of their histories, practices and significance;
•evaluate how new technologies incorporate traditional practices;
•interpret visual and verbal forms of texts; and
•critically analyse arguments around the relationship of technology and social practices.
Overview of Learning Activities
Your learning experiences will include interactive lectures, tutorials and group-based activities. There will be both individual and group exercises to further develop ideas based in classes.
Overview of Learning Resources

Your formal learning activities for this course are made up of a combination of lectures and tutorials. Your lectures will introduce you to important concepts, providing both ideas and case studies. Tutorials are centred around the discussion of these concepts, and also include a variety of skills-based workshops, group work, and a more general opportunity for students to ask questions and explore ideas.
Overview of Assessment
You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes. Assessment may consist of a range of activities such as essays, assignments, projects, reports and presentations. Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
