Pre-requisite Courses and Assumed Knowledge and Capabilities

There is no pre-requisite for this course.

You are assumed to have industry experience in supply chain, logistics, integrated logistics support, engineering, maintenance and services.

Course Description

This course is designed with the aim of developing a working knowledge of maintenance processes and the logistics of supporting complex systems and optimising systems performance. You will learn the key techniques and methods in maintenance and reliability assessment and integrate these methods with the logistics engineering issues to examine the effect of different maintenance strategies including scheduled maintenance, preventive maintenance, total productive maintenance, zero defects and other performance based system operation requirements.

    Work instructions and work flow
    Human factors and safety
  • Governance of technical sustainment operations

This course focuses on the integration of maintenance and logistics functions, which are necessary constituent components of a successful system support solution. You will assume the role of a system maintenance manager for an existing system, or for a new system but providing advice on maintenance and logistics issues.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

You will learn the integration requirements for providing a successful maintenance plan embedded with the logistics and service requirements. The knowledge of designing a maintenance system that includes human organisation and information system requires thorough understanding of how logistics functions are interweaved within the support environment. The course will introduce the latest computerised maintenance management systems, help to develop a holistic approach to maintenance efficiency, data management, work flow, in-service and out-service maintenance processes.

The learning outcome of this course is your ability to manage an integrated maintenance and logistics solution in a complex system support environment. You will be acquainted with maintenance and logistics interfacing principles that enable you to liaise with all stakeholders effectively. You will exhibit professionalism towards improving the integration of two distinct areas of work.

You will be able to:

Manage an integrated maintenance and logistics elements of a complex system support environment by

o Provide a background to maintenance management
o Develop an appreciation of the importance of the maintenance and logistics interface
o Describe work flow processes and the need for efficient and effective integration
o Explain how data is essential to manage the integration of maintenance and logistics operations
o Identify existing and future issues in system maintenance
o Assess risks and optimise system output

The system that you are maintaining is given to you due to the contractual requirements. Therefore, as a system maintenance manager, you are aware (connected to customers) of existing and future issues that the system will have during its operations. You don’t normally have all design information of the system but you need to be able to identify what is relevant to your work. Hence, you will be authoritative in applying the knowledge of information management, solution models, business process design, lifecycle management, stakeholder management, commercial constraints, organisation models and continuous improvement for the benefit of the system. The goal is to assess risks and optimise system output professionally. This course will tie together in the context of service and systems thinking to integrate completely with logistics functions that continuously improve the execution of maintenance tasks in all circumstances of the system, either in service or out of service.

Overview of Learning Activities

You will take part in a number of learning modules and interactive sessions on RMIT’s Blackboard learning system.  A number of interactive virtual classroom sessions are arranged during the semester enabling interactive exchange of ideas.

Overview of Learning Resources

All learning materials, courseware, case studies, study notes are available on RMIT’s Blackboard learning system.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment is continuous. You will have 3 major assignments.
