You should have satisfactorily completed LANG1237 or LANG1269 Interpreting Certification Practice 1 before you commence this course.
Alternatively, you may be able to demonstrate the required skills and knowledge before you start this course.

Course Description
This course is a core course for the NAATI Certified Interpreter test
This course aims to provide you with the skills and knowledge in oral transfer, the primary competency of the professional interpreter, and the ability to apply relevant contextual and pragmatic knowledge required of the particular assignment. You will also be introduced to a range of specific advanced interpreting techniques, such as conversation turn-taking and its dynamics, note-taking for consecutive interpreting, sight translation and whispered simultaneous interpreting. You will also learn how to identify and employ cohesion and intonation patterns applicable to oral communication. Upon the completion of this test, you will be eligible to sit the Certified Interpreting test administered by the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters (NAATI).

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes
- Critically reflect on and apply advanced concepts and knowledge of languages, cultures and research methods in order to facilitate communication across cultures and languages.
- Use appropriate cognitive, technical and creative skills to resolve issues of transfer and professional practice to creatively transfer the communicative intent of a speaker or written discourse or written text, from one language into another.
- Investigate, critically analyse, and apply a range of approaches to translating and interpreting, based on professional practice and discipline knowledge locally and globally.
- Apply professional communication skills in multi-lingual environments.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, you will develop skills in:
- Interpreting in dialogue (liaison) mode, with gradually increasing levels of complexity.
- Understanding the contextual framework, terminology and dynamics of communication settings in interpreting
- Developing memory, comprehension and note-taking skills
- Developing sight translation skills
- Developing whispered simultaneous skills
- Reflecting on your own practice in order to identify challenges and avenues to solve those challenges
- Applying ethical solutions to the dilemmas and challenges encountered while interpreting.
Overview of Learning Activities
You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities including online lectures tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.
Online classes will be devoted to:
1. interpreting in the various modes of professional practice - dialogue, consecutive, simultaneous and sight translation
2. discussing the contextual issues surrounding interpreting in particular domains and
3. linking interpreting exercises to the theoretical perspectives examined in other parts of the program.

The Translating & Interpreting program has developed extensive resources in interpreting including digital dialogue and consecutive interpreting passages which will be used as a basis of interpreting practice. Staff are practising interpreters who bring their own experience and examples of professional interpreting situations to the course.

Assessment Task 1: Interpreting Portfolio 20% (CLO 6)
Assessment task 2: Glossary 20% (CLO 2)
Assessment Task 3: Interpreting Performance 40% (CLO 1,2,3,4, 5, 7)
Assessment Task 4: Quizzes 20% (CLO 2)
