Course Description

The study of organisational behaviour enables managers to understand, predict and influence the behaviour of individuals and groups in organisations. This course will introduce theories and models relating to organisational behaviour and encourage students to apply and reflect upon the theories and models so they understand how theory can support managers in being effective . The course will provide the opportunity for experiential learning in practical situations, and analysis of and reflection on that learning.

If you are undertaking this course in Melbourne from semester 2, 2012 onwards your teacher will advise you if you require access to a computer for the course. It is recommended that you have access to a mobile computing device to allow greater flexibility in terms of where you can work on campus outside class times.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Recall, explain and apply theories and models relating to the behaviour of individuals and groups in organisations
  • Reflect on skills, knowledge and learning experiences , and those of fellow team members
  • Give sensitive feedback to others and reflect upon feedback received to improve your own effectiveness and the effectiveness of the group and organisation
  • Understand the complexity of human behaviour and demonstrate the flexibility required to work effectively with others;
  • Assess both your own and others’ strengths and weaknesses in organisational behaviour and identify development opportunities
  • Analyse your learning and communication styles and use this knowledge to further develop your skills in lifelong learning
  • Express ideas, concepts and arguments in a logical and coherent written form and in conformity with relevant standards of academic writing.


     


Overview of Learning Activities

Lectures, which may be face-to-face or online, will introduce theoretical concepts and models. A wide range of resources will be provided through the Learning Hub, including material developed for the course by the School of Management, available from publishers and links to the World Wide Web relating to the topics covered in the course. Students can work through these independently, providing opportunities for you to expand your knowledge and understanding of topics in this course. Online quizzes will enable you to self-assess your understanding of the concepts of the course.

Group work will provide first hand experience in identifying organisational behaviour issues and applying theories and models from the course to overcome any problems. You will be encouraged to reflect, both individually and as a group, upon the experiences gained in the group.

The course is designed to help you integrate theory and practice allowing you to explore areas of interest in depth, critically review the existing literature and test these ideas in a real world situation, through techniques such as action learning.

Overview of Assessment

Assessment in this course is concerned with your ability to:

  • Apply the theories and concepts of this course in real situations
  • Reflect upon your practice and the practice of others to enable you to enhance your performance and to equip you to be a life-long-learner.
     

This will occur through written assignments both individual and group, including a requirement to demonstrate your capacity to integrate theory and practice. In addition, your grasp of the concepts of the course may be tested in a formal test or exam. To help you to meet the assessment requirements you will receive progressive feedback on assessments and in relation to class and group activities, including giving feedback to and receiving feedback from peers.
