Course Description

This course will explore definitions of formal, informal and non- formal curriculum. You will be introduced to the relationship between curriculum and assessment and explore how this relationship relates to children’s learning and teaching practice. In particular, you will study approaches to Australian and international curriculum together with processes of the learning and teaching relationships that circulate through curriculum. Using early childhood curriculum documents that are fundamental to planning for children’s learning, you will also explore the role of collaboration with children, families and the community.

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • compare major theories of curriculum in Early Childhood settings
  • discuss the relationships between curriculum, teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Initiate and implement constructive, well considered change to curriculum in your teaching practice.
  • critique the role of formal curriculum documents


You will be assessed on your development of the following program learning outcomes in this course:

  • Develop and apply theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to your professional practice and development in curriculum, pedagogy and assessment.
  • Critically analyse, synthesize and reflect on educational policy and practice in both local and international contexts.
  • Work with others in a range of roles and contexts, demonstrating cultural, environmental and social awareness and ethical and reflective practice.

You will be engaged in learning that involves a range of activities both face to face and online such as lectures, tutorials, group and class discussion, group activities and individual research.

You will also be expected to seek further resources relevant to the focus of your own learning.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program capabilities.

Assessment may include reports, projects and presentations, individually and in groups. Assessment will cover both theoretical and practical aspects of your learning. You will be able to develop your work in relation to your own specific areas of interest in your professional practice.
