Course Description
Leadership and Social Change will provide you with the opportunity to learn about the key concepts of change, continuity and transition within the context of the learning organisation. Your learning will engage with the theoretical perspectives and assumptions underpinning current developments in professional and social change. Particular emphasis will be placed on your capacity to analyse often contradictory and complex learning organisation environments as a basis for leading and managing professional and social change.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development
This course is designed to assist students to:
- Explore trends with learning organisations and social change Investigate change management in learning organisations
- Build knowledge of leadership models for professional and social change
- Analyse, critique and apply theory about the leadership of professional and social change into practice.
Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Describe the phenomena of professional and social change;
- Demonstrate knowledge and apply understanding of the key concepts of leadership, change, continuity, and transition;
- Think critically, strategically, and creatively on practices associated with leading and managing professional and social change;
- Reflect critically on the issues of social change as they impact on the people involved;
- Analyse and critique the theoretical perspectives underpinning strategies for leadership of change management;
- Articulate the major issues and debates driving the leadership of change in professional and social systems;
- Apply knowledge of leadership for professional and social change to a relevant context.
Overview of Learning Activities
The course involves wide reading of both theory and applied cases, exercises and discussion.
Five themes and subtopics will be explored in the course.
Students will be provided with readings electronically.

There is a precribed text book and all other key learning resources are available on-line.
Overview of Assessment
Assessment tasks are directly linked to the learning objectives and will include work examples. A range of assessment activities including case studies, problem-based learning, participation in discussion, essays or presentations. Details are provided in the Part B Course Guide.
