Course Description

In this course you will be introduced to the construction of buildings and structures which will provide a background to your learning in all subsequent construction courses. This course focuses on the products of construction and explores the features and functions of buildings and structures.
Specifically, you will be introduced to the history of buildings and structures and to the main types of assets that the construction industry designs and produces. You will develop your knowledge of the distinctive and shared features of these different assets and your understanding of the role these assets play in the wider economic and social contexts.

Emphasis is also placed on the terminology of buildings and the industry. Topics studied include:

  • Introduction to the history of structures and buildings
  • Types of buildings and structures
  • Functions and features of buildings and structures

     


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • PLO1: Determine and apply knowledge of complex construction management theory to your professional practice and/or further study 
  • PLO2: Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to analyse, synthesise and apply theoretical knowledge, and technical skills, to formulate evidenced based solutions to industry problems or issues


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. CLO1: Demonstrate knowledge of the different and significant assets within the construction industry
  2. CLO2: Identify and describe the diverse features and functions of buildings and structures
  3. CLO3: Analyse the features of buildings and structures in relation to purpose, function and context
  4. CLO4: Evaluate the design of buildings and structures


Overview of Learning Activities

Key concepts in the course will be explained and illustrated through interactive workshops that focus on case studies of buildings around Melbourne and the world. Workshops will be a blend of interactive instruction, group work and presentations.   You will be actively engaged in a range of learning activities delivered face-to-face. The course consists of a series of lectures, tutorials/workshops, seminars, project work, class discussions, individual and group activities.

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment Tasks

Task 1: Individual. Five (5) online exercises each at 5%. Total weighting 25%. CLO1, CLO2

Task 2: Group (maximum of 3 students per group). Building appreciation. Total weighting 30%. CLO2, CLO3, CLO4

Task 3: Individual. Final exam. Total weighting 45%. CLO1, CLO2, CLO3, CLO4
