Course Description

This course provides a foundation in communication for property, construction and project management professionals in the twenty-first century.

The course examines verbal, written, face to face, and electronic interaction with an emphasis on effective communication in the workplace and the wider context of project management, construction and property. This is supported by a study of contextual issues such as organisational roles and structures, cross-cultural issues for a global workforce, and secure and private communication.

This course provides the basis for further development of your communication skills throughout your studies in the School of Property, Construction and Project Management.

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • PLO1: Determine and apply knowledge of complex  theory to your professional practice and/or further study
  • PLO2: Professionally communicate to a range of audiences, demonstrating in depth knowledge of the discipline and of the needs of diverse stakeholders
  • PLO5: Collaborate effectively with others and demonstrate intellectual independence and autonomy to solve problems and/or address industry issues and imperatives
  • PLO6: Critically examine and reflect on the profession, in local and/or global contexts, and question accepted interpretations and decision making

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

CLO1: Apply professional communication skills to stakeholders using digital and non-digital communication methods.
CLO2: Critically examine and reflect on learning strategies to advance study and working skills.
CLO3:  Create artifacts using the correct style, tone and language for communicating with diverse stakeholders within the work environment.
CLO4: Apply principles of academic literacy in an academic context.
CLO5: Develop your negotiation and conflict resolution skills related to the Built Environment


Overview of Learning Activities

Your ability to select and apply appropriate forms, formats and channels of communication will be developed through a variety of classroom activities that may include role plays, presentations and case analyses of organisational situations that are relevant to communicating in the property, construction and project management domains.

A range of learning resources will be available to you to support your learning, which includes a textbook, workshop notes and power point slides.


Overview of Assessment

You will be assessed on how well you meet the course’s learning outcomes and on your development against the program learning outcomes.

Assessment consists of:

Task 1: Individual work: You are required to critically evaluate your own learning style and then demonstrate how you will apply this knowledge to your future university studies, and career. You must also demonstrate and apply correct referencing style throughout the report. 25%. CLO1, CLO2

Task 2: Individual and group work: In class exercises are required to be completed in the allocated workshop time from weeks 2-12.  Individual presentations and peer reviews are included within the workshop time. The schedule for individual presentation, and peer review times will be provided on Canvas. 35%. CLO1, CLO3, CLO4 and CLO5

Task 3: Individual: You will be assessed on your ability to use Aconex, which is a software package that is a very important tool for technical communication in your chosen industry profession. Aconex certification including demonstrating your understanding of the application of the software. 10%. CLO1

Task 4: Group: You will demonstrate your professional communication skills by exploring and identifying the correct format and tone required for diverse communication requirements, including negotiations and conflicts within the workplace and personal situations.  30%.   CLO1, CLO3, CLO4 and CLO5

Feedback will be given on all assessment tasks.
