Course Description

The aim of the Course is to develop your sensitivity, awareness and understanding of policy and practice issues in the field of mental health. You will explore theories of particular relevance to mental health and be taught skills in assessment and intervention. You will develop practices in service design and delivery in mental health and community settings providing services for people with mental health concerns.

This course has been designed to reflect the national guidelines and accreditation standards specific to mental health curriculum for social work qualifying courses developed by the Australian Association of Social Works (AASW). More details are available online at http://www.aasw.asn.au/

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Identify the attitudes and values. knowledge and skills to work with individuals, families and small groups in mental health settings.
  • Identify key social issues of particular relevance to the field of mental health in the personal and family lives of Australians.
  • Demonstrate awareness of service user and social change oriented practices, within mental health services.
  • Demonstrate reflective practices, which draw upon your psychological, social and political self-awareness, and your knowledge of human behaviour and society, as it relates to the field of mental health.
  • Identify ethical and legal issues relevant to social work practice, within mental health settings, with individuals, families and groups.
