Course Description

The internship is a situated learning activity that provides you with the opportunity to apply and further develop your learning about globalisation, language, cultural diversity and change. The integration of work based learning and academic learning, commonly referred to as Work Integrated Learning (WIL), will allow you to solve authentic industry problems or address real issues faced in organizations. You will be required to secure and satisfactorily complete a work-based internship placement of 35 days (equivalent to 252 hours) in duration in a professional situation in an international or cross-cultural context either in Australia or overseas. The placement will require approval prior to commencement and is subject to travel and other restrictions which may be in place.

Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes

In course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • Apply a body of theoretical and practical knowledge of international relations, global cultures, language and economic issues to your professional practice or further study.
  • Apply logical, critical and creative thinking to effectively solve a range of problems associated with policies and programs in international and cross-cultural settings, and assess economic, cultural, social, environmental and political opportunities and risks.
  • Work professionally and effectively with others in diverse cultural, linguistic and organisational contexts, and to adapt practices and knowledge to local circumstances.
  • Communicate effectively in international and cross-cultural contexts, and facilitate collaborative partnerships within diverse communities of practice, using appropriate formats, media and styles.
  • Assist in the identification of needs, the design, planning, resourcing and implementation of research and development projects in international and cross-cultural settings.
  • Reflect on the experience of personal and professional practice in international and cross-cultural settings and to act in professionalised settings responsibly, ethically and with integrity.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course you will be able to:

  1. Examine and analyse current industry practice in the context of professional, global and cultural perspectives
  2. Apply your developing professional skills and knowledge to engage with workplace environments in your field.
  3. Identify where your skills and capabilities intersect with the needs of industry and areas for your development.
  4. Critically reflect upon your own professional practice and critically analyse the factors shaping your own professional identity

In addition to the outcomes stated above, you can earn up to four micro-credentials (digital badges) upon successful completion of this course. These credentials evidence your skills in personal advocacy, global awareness, relationship building and your general global cultural competence.

Overview of Learning Activities

Central to the internship is learning by observation, participation in teams and building career-relevant networks. This course supports the WIL internship which you will have acquired in view of your career aspirations and will have approved with the relevant approval paperwork, which needs to be lodged prior to commencing any WIL activities at least four weeks prior to the start of the internship.

You may have opportunities to participate in workshops designed to assist you in making the most of and build on your internship experiences. A series of recorded lectures, recommended readings and other learning materials are provided on the Canvas site for this course. This site also contains information about relevant micro-credentials, including how to claim them, can be found on the Canvas site for this course.

In this course, you will be provided with support to source a placement. Students cannot commence their WIL activity until they have received a confirmation email from the School with a copy of their approved WIL agreement/Student Undertaking.  Supervision arrangements must be outlined in the WIL Agreement/Student Undertaking.

RMIT University is committed to supporting student diversity and inclusion and provides support to students with a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition. Students can register with the Equitable Learning Services (ELS) who will work with the student to develop an Equitable Learning Plan (ELP) to be shared with their School. The plan may include adjustments that can be taken into consideration when preparing for a student’s placement and/or assessment conditions.

WIL activities that are based overseas or are with an international partner organisation have additional requirements that must be met before an overseas placement can be approved. For more information, please submit a query through Student Connect.

Students who are approved to undertake a WIL activity overseas must register with the Global Experiences team via Mobi.
