Course Description

This course includes a Work Integrated Learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in a real workplace context and where feedback from industry is integral to your experience.

This course is taken in the second semester of the Professional Practice year by all students enrolled in the BP147 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) program. It will complement the concurrent studies in Professional Practice courses and will focus on some key aspects of work placement.

On successful completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Draw on appropriate knowledge and skills (research, reasoning and problem solving) in order to make professional judgements and take appropriate actions.
  2. Formulate specific and appropriate management plans, including the setting of timescales.
  3. Conduct appropriate diagnostic or monitoring procedures, treatment, therapy or other actions safely and skilfully.
  4. Maintain records appropriately.
  5. Monitor and review the ongoing effectiveness of planned activity and modify it accordingly.
  6. Audit, reflect on and review practice.

The planned learning experiences and the assessment activities of this course include workplace specific activities to develop your capabilities.

You are expected to complete 200 days of  laboratory/professional practice experience over the two semesters of placement in the courses ONPS2471 Professional Practice in laboratory Medicine 1; ONPS2472 Professional Practice in Laboratory Medicine 2 and this course. In addition you can expect to spend a minimum of two hours per week in independent study.

The learning resources available during this course include the library resources of RMIT, plus the full resources of the organisation in which you are placed. The course will also have RMIT's online Learning Management System (LMS) for the conduct of an online conference throughout the semester, and for the access of documents and learning materials related to the course.

This assessment task supports CLOs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 6     

Hurdle requirement: The evidence provided for each of the competency standards must be satisfactory.
