Course Description
This course provides you with knowledge and skills in areas of intellectual property law including copyright, trademarks, designs, patents, passing off and confidential information. You will also examine the law relating to misleading and deceptive conduct and the law relating to consumers, sellers and manufacturers.
Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the law relating to intellectual property rights and its function within the Australian legal system in order to support professional practice.
- Examine the law relating to misleading or deceptive conduct and false or misleading representations under the Australian Consumer Law, and the elements of ‘passing off’ and ‘confidential information’ in order to support professional practice.
- Examine the main provisions of Copyright protection, the Trade Marks Act and the Designs Act, including the registration systems and remedies for breaches in order to support clients concerning their intellectual property rights and obligations.
- Evaluate the provisions of the law of Patents including the registration system, the types of inventions that may be subject to registration and the protection afforded by registration in order to support professional practice.

In this course you will be encouraged to be an active learner. Your learning will be supported through various in-class and online activities comprising individual and group work. These may include quizzes; assignments; prescribed readings; sourcing, researching and analysing specific information; solving problems; conducting presentations; producing written work and collaborating with peers on set tasks or projects.
