Course Description

This course provides an introduction to writing communities and the publishing industry, and develops the fundamental language and communication skills you need as a writer or an editor. For much of the course you study the theoretical rules and conventions of English grammar and syntax, while developing an understanding of how idiom, usage, register and style affect language choices for different writing contexts. You also appraise fiction and non-fiction texts for publication in specific markets and apply the principles of effective communication in editorial report writing.

In this course you will develop the following program outcomes:

3. apply and creatively adapt theoretical and technical knowledge and skills to reflect the needs and expectations of varied readerships and markets

6. communicate effectively to audiences within relevant creative and professional contexts around writing, editing and publishing.


Course Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this course you will be able to:

1. identify and apply language conventions, including vocabulary, spelling, grammar, syntax, paragraphing and some aspects of punctuation

2. use appropriate reference tools when writing and editing

3. communicate feedback on written material with tact, honesty and concision

4. critically analyse and write an editorial report on the quality and suitability of original material for a specific market
