Course Description

This course introduces you to the conventions and principles of creating, writing and adapting content for the digital world. You will explore many forms of digital publication, including social media and apps, website development and podcasting. By examining how users of digital content behave, you will discover solutions for issues such as readability, accessibility, interactivity and functionality. 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

Program Learning Outcomes

In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • identify and employ writing and editing techniques; principles and practice of communication and writing for different audiences; emerging digital media and trends and developments in the publishing industry
  • apply and creatively adapt theoretical and technical knowledge and skills to reflect the needs and expectations of varied readerships and markets
  • demonstrate analytical skills and creative solutions to respond to problems in a range of diverse writing, editing and publishing contexts.


Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to:

  • compare and contrast requirements of writing in print and digital media environments, and adapt material accordingly
  • write, edit and publish content across a range of digital forms
  • identify and target digital markets for your writing
  • structure and write web content with consideration for readability, accessibility, and search-engine optimisation
  • critique and use social media for marketing, community-building and creative purposes.


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:

  • studios, where you will learn through practice, exploration and reflection
  • lectures, which provide the framework for exploring different kinds of digital content
  • class exercises and activities designed to clarify course content and practise relevant skills
  • individual project work during which you will develop the practical skills necessary to write effective digital content for a range of audiences
  • writing workshops to assist development of writing techniques with feedback from peers and teacher
  • independent research and study, working through the course requirements as presented in classes, online and through learning materials.

Assessment Tasks


Assessment Task 1: Major project proposal (15%)

You will develop a detailed proposal for your major project.

Assessment Task 2: Digital folio (35%)

You will create two 600-word blog posts in different genres.

Assessment Task 3: Major project (50%)

You will develop a digital content project (for example, a website, an e-publication or a podcast) and write a 200-word summary and 800-word project evaluation.
