You are required to have completed Building a Strong Narrative (COMM2456).


Course Description

This course provides you with the opportunity to develop a more substantial writing project. Building on skills learned in first year, you develop your concept in consultation with your teacher and outline the project, building in realistic timelines and objectives. Your work may take the form of a novel, non-fiction project, collection of short stories or another work of fiction or creative non-fiction.

You are introduced to selected readings to inform your project and you continue to learn about aspects of narrative technique, applying these techniques to your own writing. You develop your project with the support of staff and peers in a structured classroom environment as well as in smaller workshopping groups.

Program Learning Outcomes
In this course you will develop the following program learning outcomes:

  • acquire and apply the skills to write works of fiction and non-fiction, edit professionally, create digital content, design print and web-based products, develop and manage writing and editing projects 
  • apply and creatively adapt theoretical and technical knowledge and skills to reflect the needs and expectations of varied readerships and markets.


Course Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course you will be able to: 

  • communicate the concept for your writing project, identify the form in which you are going to develop your project, and outline its structure
  • undertake and manage a long-term writing project, develop your narrative, redraft your work as necessary, reflecting on the strengths and weaknesses and reviewing constructive feedback from others to improve your work
  • provide constructive feedback to others, clearly communicating your writing and/or editing corrections, suggestions and concerns to fellow writers.


Overview of Learning Activities

This course involves considerable class discussion and workshopping, giving you an opportunity for ongoing feedback from staff and peers. You will be expected to work independently on your chosen project as well as submit and critique material for regular workshopping sessions.

Assessment Tasks

Assessment Task 1: Presentation (40%)

You will prepare a 10-minute presentation of your project outline and workshop ideas with the class.

You will write a minimum 3000-word first-draft folio of writing.
