Course Description

This course will present a range of topics in adjunctive therapies, clinical nutrition rehabilitation and the neurobiomechanical and physiological theory underpinning chiropractic. These topics can enhance the management of patients in the chiropractic clinical setting. Adjunctive therapies are tools adjunctive to active, practice based therapies. You will be expected to demonstrate how to integrate these tools into clinical practice and sound clinical thinking. You will be introduced to the application of the topics and be encouraged where, and how, to further become skilled in these areas.

This course contributes to the development of the Program Learning Outcomes in the following way:

  • PLO 1 provide specialised health care within a patient-centred, evidence-based framework;
  • PLO 2 gather clinical information to make accurate differential diagnoses, assessment and management plans and carry out effective treatment;
  • PLO 3 practice as a competent health care professional in a safe, ethical and legally responsible manner;
  • PLO 4 demonstrate cultural awareness and sensitivity in the provision of specialized health care;
  • PLO 5 communicate effectively in a range of forms (written, online, oral) and with diverse audiences (patients, community/public, agencies and health professionals);

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to:

  1. Evaluate a range of adjunctive therapies that support chiropractic management and treatment options;
  2. Discuss the application, limitations, and contraindications of adjunctive therapies, nutrition and rehabilitation;
  3. Discuss and prescribe appropriate clinical based rehabilitation, adjunctive therapies and nutrition by constructing a care plan;
  4. Utilise sound clinical based decisions using up-to-date evidence when prescribing adjunctive therapies, rehabilitation and nutrition;
  5. Demonstrate a capacity to independently evaluate, investigate and integrate into clinical practice, techniques, modalities and interventions of rehabilitation, adjunctive therapies and nutrition with other chiropractic management;
  6. Identify and apply neurobiomechanical and physiological theory which underpins the practice of chiropractic.

Overview of Assessment

This course contains hurdle requirements. All hurdle requirements for this course are indicated clearly in the assessment regime that follows, against the relevant assessment task(s) and all have been approved by the College Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Teaching).

A hurdle requirement is necessary in order to demonstrate to the accrediting body that students are competent and are being sufficiently assessed against practice-focused professional standards throughout the course of their program.

Attendance requirements

Attendance at practical classes is compulsory for several important reasons, including to prevent potential injury to participants during practical assessments. Therefore, if you don’t attend and participate effectively in at least 85% of your scheduled practical classes you won’t be entitled to a practical assessment opportunity at the end of semester, which is a hurdle requirement.
