Course Description

This course will complement the underpinning skills and knowledge required for the flying course, Flying to Instructor Rating, and prepares you for the theory component of the CASA Flight Instructor Rating.

This course includes Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in real or simulated workplace context. Feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience. WIL activities may include simulations or projects using industry technology, equipment and processes.

 


Objectives/Learning Outcomes/Capability Development

This course contributes to the following Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) for AD023.

  • Demonstrate the application of skills and knowledge to adapt fundamental principles, concepts and techniques to known and unknown situations
  • Show initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in aviation practice; with communication and analytical skills to interpret and transmit responses to sometimes complex problems.
  • Taking responsibility and accountability for own learning and work in collaboration with others within broad parameters.


Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs)

On completion of this course you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the application of skills and knowledge to adapt fundamental principles, concepts and techniques to known and unknown situations
  2. Display initiative and judgement in planning, problem solving and decision making in aviation practice; with communication and analytical skills to interpret and transmit responses to sometimes complex problems.
  3. Demonstrating responsibility and accountability for own learning and working in collaboration with others within broad aviation parameters
  4. Understand the fundamentals of Principals and methods of instruction
  5. Develop lesson Plans in accordance with the CASA Manual of Standards (MOS)
  6. Recall the principles of threat and error management and apply them practically


Overview of Learning Activities

The learning activities included in this course are:

  • Attendance at lectures where syllabus material will be presented and explained.
  • Completion of tutorial questions and possibly workshop projects designed to give further practice in the application of flying theory to given situations, and to give feedback on student progress and understanding;
  • Completion of class exercises consisting of numerical calculations and other factors requiring an integrated understanding of the subject matter; and
  • Private study, working through the course as presented in classes, information gathered from practical demonstrations and learning materials, and gaining practice at solving flight related calculations
  • Tests and CASA Exams. 


Overview of Learning Resources

You will be required to use CASA and other texts and as well as receiving classroom handouts. Videos, practical demonstrations and discussions in the classroom will enhance your learning.


Overview of Assessment

This course has no hurdle requirements

Assessment Task 1: Class Test on required prior knowledge
Weighting towards final grade (%): 20%
This assessment task supports all CLOs 1 - 6


Assessment Task 2: Class Tests at the end of each topic
Weighting towards final grade (20% each): 40%
This assessment task supports CLO 3,4 and 6

Assessment Task 3: Final Oral Test: Covering all topics covered during the semester
Weighting towards final grade (%): 40%
This assessment task supports all CLOs 1 - 6

Note: RMIT will facilitate your CASA Flight Instructor test and the associated cost of the first attempt is incorporated in the course fee.
